“The Show Must Go Off,” a new special report from Luminate, which was previewed exclusively in partnership with Variety VIP+, analyzes the TV content released by the eight largest U.S.-based subscription video on demand (SVOD) services — Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+ and Peacock — along with the major broadcast and cable networks, between January 2020 and August 2023, through the lens of series cancellations.
Some key findings include:
- The major streamers overall had a combined average cancellation rate of 12.2% —not much higher than linear TV (10.8%), but less than half of broadcast TV alone over that period.
- While Netflix is often used as the prime example of the streamer that “cancels everything,” the study found the streaming service actually axed just 10.2% of its shows in the period measured.
- Apple TV+ had the lowest cancellation rate of any outlet by far, at just 4.9%. That’s in part a reflection of Apple’s deep pockets and ability to nurture series over time.
