Luminate just released its 2023 Film & TV Year-End Report, the introductory edition of the company’s new annual report that showcases data-fueled insights behind the biggest trends in film, TV and SVOD content. The report, fueled by Luminate’s industry-leading film & TV intelligence data, supplemented by its audience research insights, includes genre analysis of TV premieres across linear, cable and SVOD, unpacks surges in foreign-language content released in the U.S., and provides a snapshot of theatrical content releases.
SOME KEY FINDINGS REVEALED IN THE REPORT INCLUDE:
- In 2023, TV season premieres saw a -21% decrease across linear, cable and streaming in the U.S.
- In 2023, theatrical wide releases and streaming film releases saw a combined slight uptick of +4% in the U.S.
- Amongst all genres and across all platforms, comedies saw the biggest TV premiere decreases, down -30%, in 2023 in the U.S.
- Thrillers led all genres in film release increases, up +22%, when looking at theatrical and streaming film content in 2023 in the U.S.
- When looking at IP types, or arenas, foreign-language content saw a +22% increase in streaming film releases, making it 2023’s biggest growing arena in that format in the U.S.
- 46% of all U.S. theatrical releases in 2023 were literary adaptations or remakes.
Speaking on the release of the report, Luminate CEO Rob Jonas said, “After a disruptive twelve months in Hollywood, including two major guild strikes, multi-genre summer box office successes and continued discourse around streaming data transparency, 2023 is a fitting year for us to capture in the release of Luminate’s first-ever Film & TV Year-End Report. The recent challenges and innovations seen by the film and television industries have proven that the need for valuable and reliable data within the entertainment ecosystem has never been higher. It’s Luminate’s mission to continue working on solutions to Hollywood’s data problems in 2024, specifically with the forthcoming release of our Streaming Viewership product.”
Last year, Luminate revealed plans for its new Streaming Viewership (M) product, which measures minutes watched of original content on all of the major SVOD platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock and Max, via best-in-class data science modeling combined with public and private data sources and entertainment metadata for contextual reference. The product, now operating in Beta, will launch in the general market later this year. Learn more and inquire about accessing a demo of the product here.
