Last month, Scott Ryan, Luminate’s EVP (Commercial Music Consumption, Insights and Quansic), presented key industry updates at the All That Matters entertainment and media conference in Singapore. The presentation, which you can download here, focuses on trends in market-level audio streaming, artist country of origin and the urgent need for cleaner metadata solutions in a global marketplace. Reading between the lines these topics reveal that, while local cultures strongly influence music consumption, global trends and music border-crossing are becoming more prominent. For artists and industry professionals, understanding these regional dynamics can unlock new growth opportunities.
Here are three key statistics from Ryan’s Insights Matter: Music Insights for the Global and Asia Pacific Markets presentation:
1. Japan’s Regional Streaming Share is Rising
Japanese artists have seen a significant increase in their streaming share across the Asia-Pacific and Australia/New Zealand (APAC+ANZ) region, growing by 5.3 percentage points in 2024. This growth is driven by 180 more Japanese artists ranking in the regional Top 10K compared to last year. This uptick signals Japan’s strengthening influence within the global music scene, particularly in APAC+ANZ, highlighting the potential for international collaborations and further expansion of Japanese music across borders.
2. Engaging with Foreign Content
A staggering 95% of Filipino music listeners engage with foreign content, making the Philippines one of the markets most open to global music. This high level of engagement with international music contrasts sharply with markets like Japan, where local content dominates. For international artists, the Philippines presents a prime opportunity for increasing reach and visibility, especially for genres and artists that are underrepresented locally.
3. Australia is Engaging with Streaming Growth at a High Level
Australia is one of several markets in APAC+ANZ that has notched double-digit audio streaming growth in 2024. This strong performance underscores the country’s increasing embrace of DSP music consumption. As Australian audiences become more engaged with streaming platforms, artists from outside the market have found success tapping into this fast-growing segment of the global music industry.
