Last week on Friday, March 15, at South By Southwest in Austin, Luminate CEO Rob Jonas delivered a featured presentation detailing the top data trends in both music and Film & TV. The presentation, Top Entertainment Trends for 2024: What the Data Says, covered topics ranging from changes in music streaming to the rise of foreign content in music as well as in Film & TV, and provided an update on the Global Track Streaming Pyramid that was highlighted in his 2023 SXSW presentation. Here are 10 of the biggest stats from Jonas’ presentation.

  1. It Was All A Stream: 4.1T Global On-Demand Audio streams in 2023, +22% vs. 2022
  2. Growing Global: The streaming of English language content in the U.S. has decreased by -3.8 percentage share points since 2021 as Spanish language content increases +3.8 percentage share
  3. Audience Discovery: 46% of U.S. Gen Alpha Music Streamers are active on YouTube Shorts
  4. Super Fans and Their Superpower: Super fans spend 68% more money on music each month than the average U.S. music listener
  5. The Longer Lifespan of Content: 48% of audio streaming in the U.S. last year came from music released between 2019 and 2023
  6. The Power of Female Artists: Music streaming from female artists increased 4.2 percentage sharepoints in 2023
  7. The Circle of Live: Live music events make up 62% of monthly music spend amongst U.S. music listeners
  8. Cleaning the Mess of Metadata: “Everybody has the right to be named Drake and everyone has the right to create a song called ‘One Dance’”
  9. Mindfulness & Music: 3-4% of tracks ranked 100-120K can be classified as NEARS
  10. The Head, The Tail…The Whole Thing: 103.5K new ISRCs were delivered to DSPs each day in 2023, +10.8% vs. 2022
